– Keep the charge in the middle: Aim to keep the battery between roughly 20% and 80% for routine use.

– Use optimized charging: Most modern phones include an “optimized charging” or “adaptive charging” feature that slows the final part of a charge to reduce time spent at maximum voltage. Turn this on when available.
– Avoid extreme temperatures: Heat is a top accelerator of battery wear. Don’t leave phones in hot cars, direct sun, or on charging pads that trap heat. If a device gets very hot while charging, remove any case that might be trapping warmth.

– Reduce screen drain: Display brightness and refresh rate are among the biggest power consumers. Set brightness to auto, enable dark mode if the phone has an OLED panel, and lower refresh rate when high refresh is unnecessary.
– Close or restrict battery-hungry apps: Background activity management can prevent certain apps from draining the battery and forcing frequent charging.
– Use battery saver modes: These limit background tasks and performance to stretch battery between charges, which indirectly reduces total cycles over time.
– Keep software updated: System updates often include efficiency improvements and better power management.

Storage and long-term care
– Store at around half charge: If a device won’t be used for an extended period, power it down and store it at roughly 40–60% charge. Storing fully charged or fully depleted batteries can accelerate capacity loss.
– Calibrate occasionally: If the battery percentage seems inaccurate, running one controlled cycle (discharge to around 10–20% then charge to full) can help the system recalibrate the meter. This doesn’t restore capacity, only reporting accuracy.
– Monitor battery health: Many phones show battery health or maximum capacity metrics.

When capacity falls significantly, battery replacement is often more cost-effective than buying a new device.

When replacement is the best option
A declining battery that causes shutdowns, rapid drops in percentage, or poor performance may need replacing. Professional replacements or manufacturer service centers use appropriate parts and maintain safety standards. Replacing the battery can extend a device’s useful life with a smaller environmental footprint than replacing the whole phone.

Consistent, simple habits—moderating charge extremes, avoiding heat, using optimized charging, and tuning settings—can meaningfully slow battery wear.
